Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES is selling a tiny house built by high school juniors and seniors.
Students in the Building Trades program at Adirondack Educational Center in Saranac Lake build a tiny house each year, giving them hands-on experience with framing, insulation, roofing and other carpentry skills, and even some electrical, heating and plumbing.
Because students start Building Trades in their junior year and continue the program in their senior year, they end up gaining experience working on two different tiny houses. Building Trades Teacher Clarence Brockway tries to change up elements like the structure’s layout and the electrical system each year to give students broader experience.
The tiny house being sold now was mostly constructed over the 2022-2023 school year, with some finishing touches done over this summer and fall.
It is built on a trailer so it can be towed from place to place and features sturdy vinyl siding, a fold-out porch, sliding glass doors, solar-powered electric and a beautiful pine interior.
The house is being sold through online bidding website Auctions International. Bidding will close at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17. To learn more or submit a bid, go to fehb.org/tinyhouse.
The house cost about $42,000 in materials to build. Any money from the sale earned over that cost will be put toward supporting FEH BOCES programs.
Building Trades is one of six future-focused Career and Technical Education programs housed at Adirondack Educational Center in Saranac Lake. These programs help students develop real-world work skills and provide them with opportunities to potentially earn certifications and college credits through their studies. The school serves students from the Tupper Lake, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Long Lake school districts.
Anyone interested in learning more about FEH BOCES or AEC is welcome to visit an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at 711 Route 3 in Saranac Lake.
