This summer, Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES will host a new Summer Trades Camp for middle school students who want to learn trades skills.
The weeklong day camp will run Monday, July 15 through Friday, July 19, with sessions starting at 9 a.m. and wrapping up at 2 p.m. Camp will be held at North Franklin Educational Center, at 23 Husky Lane in Malone.
It’s open to students who will be entering 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the 2024-25 school year in five local school districts: Brushton-Moira, Chateaugay, Malone, St. Regis Falls and Salmon River.
“NFEC is excited to offer this program to our component district middle school students,” said NFEC Principal Rozzie Poirier. “We have noticed that interest in our Career and Technical Education programs is growing, as our enrollment numbers have been steadily increasing. Giving students exposure to the trades at an earlier level will give them a taste of what we have to offer here at NFEC and get them excited about their future options in high school and beyond.”
Students will choose two trades out of four options: Building Trades, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology and Health Occupations. They will get to try out skills in the two trades they focus on through hands-on learning and project-based tasks.
Summer Trades Camp will also be an opportunity for students to make new friends from districts outside of their own while exploring careers and having fun.
Tuition for the program is $200 per student. Registration is first come, first served.
