Student carries Wraeaths to lay on Veterans headstones

On the crisp morning of December 19, 2024, students from the North Franklin Educational Center honored local veterans through a meaningful, hands-on initiative. Senior students ventured to St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Malone, carefully placing handmade wreaths on the graves of veterans. With the crunching snow beneath their boots, they honored these heroes with deep respect, ensuring each wreath was carefully positioned near graves marked by flags symbolizing their service.

Under the guidance of Building Trades instructors Eric Ashlaw and Shawn Niles, the students meticulously sought out the resting places of veterans, with each wreath serving as a heartfelt tribute. This project began earlier in December when students visited Earl’s Balsam Hill Christmas Tree Farm. The farm generously welcomed the group, donating materials needed for the wreaths. Together with Earl’s staff, the students learned to cut fresh branches, then returned to the school shop to assemble the wreaths in preparation for today’s event.

Ashlaw, recently named the Rotary Club’s Educator of the Year, has been a driving force behind this initiative. His dedication to fostering community engagement and creativity, along with Niles’ leadership, highlights the school’s commitment to holistic education.

"Learning how to build is just one part of the classroom experience," Niles shared. "Equally important is teaching students about kindness and moral responsibility."

The project also emphasized teamwork, craftsmanship, and the importance of community partnerships. Earl’s Balsam Hill Christmas Tree Farm played a vital role in its success.

"Earl's Tree Farm generously donated all the boughs and bows for the wreaths and even showed us how to put them together," Ashlaw said. "We couldn’t have done it without them."

The wreath-laying  was a moving tribute, showcasing the power of collaboration between students, educators, and community partners. NFEC extends its sincere gratitude to Earl’s Balsam Hill Christmas Tree Farm and everyone involved in making this initiative possible.
